What does my child need to know before starting this activity?


She would need to be able to do the activities in Part 1 of this series which consists of simple 1-step to 2-step instructions. Click the image below to go to Part 1:

How do I conduct the therapy?


There are two sets of activities in this post:


The 1st Activity involves giving simple 2-Step Instructions. Your child will select the correct fruit and place it on the tree.

EG: "Put the orange on the tree" (fruit type= orange, location= on the tree)


The 2nd Activity involves giving 3-Step Instructions. Here your child will select the correct fruit and the correct quantity of that fruit and place it on the tree.

EG: "Place 3 lemons on the tree" ( quantity=3, fruit type= lemon, location= on the tree)


What do I need to conduct this therapy activity ?

Lets Start Preparing !

STEP 1

Cut out each of the apples, oranges and lemons in the picture above.


ACTIVITY 1


Setting the table...

Place the picture of the tree on the table together with 3 different fruits.

Conducting the activity


You say : "Put an apple on the tree"


"Very good, an apple on the tree"


You say : "Now place an orange on the tree"


"Good job, there's an apple and an orange on the tree"


If the activity is too easy for your child, add more fruits for her to choose from OR Jump ahead to ACTIVITY 2


ACTIVITY 2

Setting the table...

Place the picture of the tree on the table together with a variety of different fruits.

Conducting the activity


You say : "Put 2 apples on the tree"


"Very good, look ! There are 2 apples on the tree"


You say : "Now place 3 lemons on the tree"


"Wow! There are 2 apples and 3 lemons on the tree"


Repeat with the other fruits until your child has mastered this skill level.

What's next ? How can I make it more difficult ?

You can target another goal here, using the word "and".


You say : "Put 3 apples and 2 oranges on the tree"

"That's fantastic!! There are 5 fruits on the tree"

(if she looks confused, count the number of fruits on the tree)


Remove all the fruits and start again

You say : "Now place 3 lemons and 1 orange on the tree"

"That's fantastic!! There are 3 fruits on the tree now"

Are there any important points for me to take note of ?

Yes, the points below may seem to be totally insignificant however it can make or break your child's desire to learn.

  • Your child would have heard the word "FANTASTIC" in computer games or the television and would be glad to hear you praise her using it.

  • Also do say the word "and" slightly louder than the rest of the words.

  • Do remember to make your voice a little OVER ENTHUSIASTIC ...kids simply love it.

  • Try not to use negative words such as "wrong" instead use "lets try again, mama will help you"
